Cleaner streets for Garfield

The Garfield Recreation Reserve Environment Action Team (GRREAT) held a Clean Up Australia Day event, collecting a significant amount of rubbish and recyclables despite the wet and cold weather.

Led by Meg Platte on 16 March, a dedicated team of four locals collected five bags of rubbish, one bag of cans and bottles for recycling, and various other items, including an old broken plastic tub, a croc, rusty barbed wire, and an old folding chair.

When asked if the event was a success, the team responded with a resounding “yes!“

They emphasized that community efforts, no matter the size, are always valuable and make a positive impact. The team celebrated their hard work with a hot drink and morning tea at Brewsters Cafe on Main Street.

The Garfield Rec Reserve Environment team meets fortnightly on Sundays from 9.30am to support the 14 Mile Road Biodiversity Project. With funding from a Cardinia Shire Biodiversity Grant, the team has planted 1500 trees, shrubs, and grasses.

Two upcoming community planting days, supported by the Cannibal Creek Catchment Landcare group, are scheduled for June 22 and August 10. These events will include morning tea and lunch, courtesy of Cardinia Shire funding.

Team members Iain, Lara, Margaret, and Meg invite the community to join them in their efforts to protect and preserve the local environment.
