Students get down and dirty to clean up the world

PAKENHAM Secondary College students got their hands dirty yesterday (Wednesday) as they kick-started planting for National Tree Day.
The students began to rejuvenate land beside Pakenham’s Toomuc Creek where residents can visit this Sunday to do their own planting.
Cardinia Shire mayor Bill Ronald encouraged residents to attend the community event which will be held near the wetlands at Pakenham Lakeside.
“National Tree Day is a chance for the local community to have a positive, hands-on involvement in improving our environment. The site proposed to be revegetated at Toomuc Creek forms an important creek corridor for local fauna and plant life,” he said.
Cr Ronald said people of all ages were welcome to join in the planting from 10am to 2pm. Equipment will be provided and there is also a free barbecue lunch for participants.
Cr Ronald said students from St Patrick’s Primary School, Lakeside Lutheran College and Pakenham Consolidated School had also been involved in carrying out plantings in the area.
“The local students have played an active role in improving the environment as well learning about the native flora and fauna in the area, including the Growling Grass Frog,” he said.
Sunday’s event is supported by Delfin Lend Lease, the Lakeside Neighbourhood Watch group, Rotary and Council.
