Both sides played at home and spectators were entertained with an interesting display of bowls, with both sides winning in rather contrasting circumstances.
Side one played Pakenham in what was anticipated to be a close and hard-fought game, and no one was disappointed except perhaps the Pakenham players, as they lost a game they could easily have won.
Pakenham did win on two of the three rinks played, however the other was a disaster.
Keith Lewis skipped that winning rink, and he, with Dennis Patmore, Bill Hite and Len Judge destroyed their opponents in a 46-8 thrashing.
That win carried the side to a very handy 14-shot victory.
Both these sides featured in last season’s division three grand final at Berwick and only five shots separated them at the finish, with Pakenham grabbing a late lead to claim the title.
This saw both teams promoted to division two, where they both have found themselves totally outclassed.
Winless on the bottom are Pakenham, and one position above are Cardinia Waters with two wins.
A fair cry from the glory of last season, but both should expect relegation back to the comfort of division three next season.
Keith Lewis’s scorecard tells the story.
At lunch they were trotting along at 14-3 and after the break it was a sea of big numbers.
In the last 11 ends they picked up 32 shots, including a seven, two consecutive sixes, one five and a four.
To add to Pakenham’s woe their rink only won two of the last 11 ends.
This week’s game saw the conclusion of the first half of the home-and-away season.
Cardinia Waters start the next half with an away game at the Dandenong Club, who won their previous encounter.
In a game where second plays second-last it would take a special effort for Cardinia Waters to win.
Also playing at home was side two who played Berwick, resplendent in their new uniforms.
However, Cardinia Waters, also wearing new shirts, won comfortably by 23 shots.
They picked up 14 points, which sees them now in second place on the ladder behind Edithvale.
Not much separates these teams, who played out a draw in their earlier round three encounter.
The best winning Cardinia Waters rink consisted of Mick Knight, Jim Barrie, Gary Bondfield and Bill Tippelt who had an easy 30-10 win.
They won 15 of the 21 ends with many multiples.
Also winning with a 20-13 scoreline were John Carr, Ian Kennedy, Ron Seamer and Paul Brindle.
They were doing it easy at 16-3 at lunch, before dawdling home after lunch by seven shots.
Next week sees side two entertain Cranbourne RSL at home.
They lost their first-round encounter at Cranbourne RSL but could get the points at home.
SATURDAY PENNANT
Two good wins from two games played gave Cardinia Waters bowlers reason to smile on Saturday. They almost pulled off a clean sweep winning six of the seven rinks played.
At home side two had sweet revenge over Churchill Waverley Golf, who gave them a bowls lesson in the very first game of the season.
Cardinia Waters won 76-42, and took away all 16 points.
This win cements top spot on the ladder, and the 22-point buffer will keep them there, as they have a bye next week.
All rinks won, and the most successful was Mick Knights securing a 25-9 win.
He played with Robert Mitchell, Bill Tippelt and Paul Mercieca, and they led all day winning a whopping 15 ends.
Len Judge filled in for regular skip John Carr, who was unwell.
He played with Peter Mitchell, Jenny Cole and Therese Mitchell, who needed to come from behind but once in front romped away winning 27-13.
Another slow starter was Marie Stephenson’s rink.
They were behind at afternoon tea time, but played their best bowls late in the day.
They won 24-20 and Marie played with Paul Brindle, Donny Gibson and Lorraine Devine.
Over at Beaumaris, side one had a handy win, dropping just one rink and failing by two shots to get the weekend’s “clean sweep”.
The winning score was 80-62 and the 16 points they won will help them stay in fourth spot on the ladder.
The best rink was skipped by Steve Hale, assisted by Ashley Graham, Dennis Patmore and Gary Bondfield, who won 22-10 after leading all day.
John Van Vugt had a safe win, but used up a big lead in the second half before steadying late to win 25-18.
He played with Marion Stevens, Ian Kennedy and Ron Seamer.
Ray Naylor had a lucky win by just a single shot.
His rink was always just a few shots in arrears, but scored a four on end 20 to grab the lead and hang onto it.
Ray played with Stuart Tokely, Cathy Swinkels and Jill Naylor.
This Saturday is the final round before the Christmas Holiday break, and side one play Burden Park at home.
In round two Cardinia Waters had a handy win on the Burden Park grass.
