Local students spent a day learning about nature and culture at the ‘Caring for Country’ student forum in Pakenham provided by Landcare and Bunurong Land Council.

Despite a chilly morning, the sun came out perfectly for a day out of the classroom for local schools who went to Deep Creek Reserve on Thursday 20 June to join a host of activities about the unique local biosphere and its unwavering links to indigenous culture.

Lang Lang, Neerim South, Gembrook, Jindivick and Labertouche Primary Schools along with Nar Nar Goon’s St James Catholic Primary School attended the day. Learning many things from natural weaving to how a didgeridoo is played.

This event is the culmination of over a month long series of excursions run by Western Port Catchment Landcare Network and Bunurong Land Council with the goal of developing an understanding for ‘caring for country’ in young students. The forum was also joined by the Cardinia Environment Coalition, Melbourne Water and Mornington Peninsula lifestyle educator Earth Flower Wilding.

This forum was a way for all the schools to come together and expand their experience from their own excursions.

The free local program was funded by Parks Victoria’s Innovation Fund 2024.
