Shire says thanks to volunteers

VOLUNTEERS from across Cardinia Shire will be recognised for their outstanding contribution to the community this week as part of National Volunteer Week.
National Volunteer Week runs from 12 May to 18 May and council will host its annual volunteer reception today at the Cardinia Cultural Centre.
Cardinia Shire mayor Bill Ronald said council recognised and valued the work done by volunteers.
Cr Ronald said volunteers were the “lifeblood” of a community.
“We appreciate all of their hard work and I look forward to joining representatives of our many volunteer groups and organisations at the special council celebration for volunteers,” Cr Ronald said.
“Council is working with the community to make Cardinia Shire one of the best places in Victoria to live, work and raise a family and we owe a huge debt to our volunteers for the enormous contribution they make.”
Some stand-out volunteers were acknowledged earlier this year at council’s Citizen of the Year awards. Dot Griffin from Cockatoo was named Cardinia Shire Citizen of the Year 2008 and Adam Ballis from Clematis was named Young Cardinia Shire Citizen of the Year 2008.
Cardinia Shire Senior Citizen of the Year for 2008 was Hanna Salzwedel, while members of the Bunyip and District Agricultural Show committee were acknowledged for their efforts when the event was named Community Event of the Year.
Council is also undertaking a two year project in conjunction with the Department of Planning and Community Development called Volunteering in Cardinia Shire.
The project aims to map and promote volunteering shire-wide, increase opportunities for volunteering, recruit and provide training opportunities for volunteers and establish partnerships to support ongoing volunteer participation.
