JUNIORS
UNDER 12: Pumas 0 v Frankston 4
A great game with lots of good contact with the bat. Ryder and Noah worked hard on the mound, while Paddy did amazingly behind the plate, catching for the first time. Congratulations Cooper for getting your first catch in a great team effort.
UNDER 14: Pumas 10 v Berwick 6
Another beautiful Saturday morning on the baseball field. Well done to our players that tried something new this week. Jye pitching for the first time, loading up the zone, and Logan behind the plate, catching. Cooper came in to relieve and pitched really well. A strong week with the bats, scoring five-run innings twice. Chloe got a nice hit to left field. The whole team is gaining confidence stealing bases and always running hard to first base. The sun was shining, the kids were smiling and everyone was having fun.
UNDER 16: Pumas 13 v Frankston Black 10
A close game this weekend with the team putting in their all to get over the line. Great work on a well-earned win!
SENIORS
A1: Pumas 2 v Dandenong 6
It was a good team effort but we didn’t play our best game. Defence was good and the team had no errors. It was a game to learn from and to use going forward for the rest of the season to play to our best ability every game.
A2: Pumas 12 v Dandenong 3
We travelled to Dandenong looking to bounce back after a disappointing game the previous weekend. The Pumas jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning and continued to put pressure on the Angels throughout the game while also playing solid defence to nullify and pressure.
Joel Anson was solid on the mound going four innings before Liam Hough closed it out in style. Offensively the Pumas had many contributors with Jason Rossit leading the way with three hits.
C1: Pumas 11 v Mornington 2
Pumas were on the positive side of a first-inning blowout. With Ray Pal on the bump, the Pumas allowed two runners on base, between two strikeouts and a running Michael Elijah catch at centre, we held them scoreless. The Pumas opening up with a six-run first innings, courtesy of singles to Brad Jones and Ray Pal, a double to Chris Appleby, in between patient hitters taking walks and stealing bases. The second inning saw grounders to Brad and a tagged out at third to Tim Stockdale with another strike out. In the second, Billo took his second walk before stealing around and was hit in via an Elijah single; 0-7. The third inning saw the Pirates get two runners across the plate, but after a strike out, Connor Mills took a catch at left field and threw out the second base runner who forgot to tag to end the inning on a double play. Next inning, a catch to Brad at second, and a dropped third strike out at first, we were again in control. A grounder to short saw Billo taking the easy out with Brad on the force, to bat again. Walks to Bernie Tyers and Billo, with a Ray single in between, saw the base paths alive again. Two wild pitches saw two runs in and when Michael hit a long fly to centre, we had another run to the tally. Chris singled again, but was left on base with the side retired. We entered the fifth with a pitching change, bringing in Tim. A pop up, and two strike outs kept the Pirates off the board. Brad got our only hit in the next at bat, and quickly got his way around to score. The defensive inning saw a ground out back to the mound and two infield flies handled by Chris and Brad to end the game. We are now half a game clear on top of the ladder.
C2: Pumas 7 v Mornington 1
Pumas started strong scoring five runs in the first inning. Will Mayberry singled, scoring two runs, then scored one run on an error before Kyle Peck singled scoring two more runs.
Both teams then went out for out in a fast-past game before the Pumas scored two in the eighth to close out 7-1 winners.
The Pumas collected nine hits in the game. Kyle Peck, Will Mayberry, and Wayne Porter each collected two hits, while Peck and Mayberry each drove in two runs.
Scott Dale threw well for the Pumas striking out 13 batters while giving up no hitter.
D: Pumas White 8 v Pumas Black 9
The first and only ‘Pumas’ Derby of the year with the Black side taking home bragging rights in a close one. The White side got off to a strong start, retiring the first three batters before a hit to left field with bases loaded by Kevin D’Arcy brought in two. The second though saw Pakenham Black bring 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs highlighted by a hit to right field by Gregg Clutterbuck to score two. In response Anthony Clissold managed to hold the ‘home’ team to just one run, getting themselves out of a jam by striking out three batters in a row. From there on the game tightened up and going into the fifth inning Pakenham Black had a 4-9 lead. A strikeout, fly out and then caught stealing saw the Pakenham White team give themselves a shot at wrestling back the lead but time ran out as they went down 8-9. Most importantly though it was a game played in fantastic spirits with lots of good-natured ribbing and players helping out the opposition with advice. The Pumas Pride award went to Angus Peters who best displayed those qualities putting in a fantastic effort behind the dish, hustling on every play and encouraging everyone. WOMENS: Pumas 13 v Frankston 12
The Pumas women’s team took on the Frankston Tomatoes for our first home game on a cold and rainy Sunday.
Frankston started well on the bats but our starting pitcher Olivia Garcia weathered the storm. Holly Lunn made the first out with a fly ball from Frankston’s Lieseil Bouker and an unassisted second out; before Olivia finished the inning with a strike out. The ladies held the visitors to five runs, giving our batters something to chase. Felicity Clissold started us off with a safe hit to center field. The ladies showed great discipline in the batter’s box and aggressive base running. Our ladies took advantage of the opportunities and scored seven runs, giving us a handy lead going into the second inning.
The Tomatoes rallied in the second to put on seven runs, bringing the Pumas back up to bat. The ladies scored another six runs to take the win 13-12. With bad weather rolling in, the umpires made the decision to call the game off early, preventing us from going into a third inning.
