Huge weekend for happy Hammond

DROUIN GOLF

Drouin Golf and Country Club has dominated the men’s section of the West Gippsland Golf Championships held at Traralgon on Sunday with Ryan Hammond tipping out fellow club member Leon Cook at the top of the leaderboard.

Hammond opened with a morning 76 and a closed with a brilliant 67 to sneak past Cook in the afternoon session.

Cook played consistently for his second-place finish, signing off on scores of 74 and 72.

This was a great result for our boys and a big congratulations must go to the large contingent of Drouin members who represented the club on the day.

Sunday’s win completed a fantastic weekend for Hammond, who paired with Mark Allen to win the annual Don Piner Memorial Two-Person Ambrose event on Saturday.

Allen and Hammond finished with a rock-solid nett 61 to finish the best of the 68 pairs that took part.

Runners up with a score of nett 62 were Paul Matthews and Kelly Belcher, while David and Anthony Lillis combined to finish third with a score of 63.25.

Fourth Place went to Damian Birte and Luke Dudley scoring a nett 64.

Down the lines went to Jim Defoe and Ron Tomasetti 64.25, Fred Allen and Bob Simpson 64.75, Sean Kelly and Shane Davidson 64.75, Maryanne Batson and Leanne Pollard 65.25, Kevin Johnson and Benny Wyatt 65.5, Darren Wolfenbuttel and Duart Perrin 65.75, Les Jones and Dean Jones 65.75, Eric Robbins and Graham Austin 66 and Gary Fry and Rod Gardner 66.5.

Nearest the pins went to 5th Benny Wyatt (Sharkey’s Barbershop), 8th Shane Dwyer (Siam Pesto Restaurant), 10th Dean Jones (Pro Pin) and 14th Sharon Rippon (Commercial Hotel Warragul).

Target Hole Winner was Ken Cooper on the 3rd hole.

Wednesday

The midweek competition last week was Par.

A Grade was a close contest, with a countback needed to separate the top two players.

Duart Perrin claimed the victory with Glenn Robinson finishing runner up with both players scoring +4.

Bruce Salmon won B Grade on a countback with a score of +2, while Rob Piner came in runner up also with +2.

The best score for the day came in C Grade with Kerry Nielsen finishing with +5.

Runner up went to Bruce Page with +4 and Malcolm Rawson won the Super Six prize with +4.

Down the lines went to Cameron Snell +3, Brian Maunder +1, Rob McCrae, Pete Downward, Malcolm Rawson and Allan Logan – all finishing square – and Reg Dixon, Benny Wyatt, Bryan Delaney and Jim Bethune with -1.

Nearest the pins went to 5th Reg Dixon, 8th Simon Appleby, 10th and 14th Matthew Roberts.

The medley stableford competition on Sunday was won by Grant Wilson with 37 points.

Upcoming competitions are Stableford: midweek, Saturday and Sunday.

DROUIN LADIES

Drouin Ladies played an Individual Stableford event on Tuesday 12 March.

Division 1 winner was Sharon Rippon (15) with 32 points on a countback from Marg Purcell (15) also on 32 points.

Division 2 winner was Angela Greenall (44) with 41 points and runner up was Helen Moon (26) with 35 points on a countback.

Down the line balls went to Karen Adams 35 points, Sue Hatfield 33 and Marg Murray 33.

Nearest the pins went to 5th Helen Moon, 8th Glenda Warren, 8th (2nd Shot) Karen Adams, 10th Anne Neilson and 14th Karen Adams.

The Drouin Golf Club held the Clarks Blinds and Screens Ladies Open 4BBB event on Friday 15 March, with players coming from all over the district to enjoy the wonderful Drouin course.

Clubs represented were Berwick Montuna, Garfield, Trafalgar, Leongatha, Cheltenham, Traralgon, Warragul and Drouin.

Division 1 winners were Helen Moon (Drouin) and Kay Dumbleton (Leongatha) with 43 points.

Runners up were Kerri Ahearn and Kylie Golding from Warragul with 39 points.

Division 2 winners were Michelle Fairlie (Drouin) and Anny Byrne (Warragul) with 40 points.

Runners up were Maryanne Batson (Drouin) and Carol Ronalds (Berwick-Montuna) with 39 points on a countback.

Down the line balls went to Sheila Harper and Mary Waterfall (Berwick-Montuna) with 39 points, and Valerie Crow and Kay Grieve (Drouin) with 38 points on a countback.

Nearest the pins went to: 5th Cheryl Deppeler, 8th Anne Neilson, 8th (2nd Shot) Anne Roberts, 10th Anne Neilson.

Monday Pennant competition commenced yesterday with Drouin playing Churchill-Monash, the current Premiers, at Warragul.

Next Tuesday, 26 March, is a Stableford Multiplier event.

After Easter, 2 April will be our next Monthly Medal/Stroke event.
