CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

PENNANT GRAND FINAL – SIDE ONE

Cardinia Waters’ midweek side one was very brave in defeat at Berwick last Tuesday.

Facing arch-rival Pakenham they looked like winning the flag until fading late to finish runners-up by just five shots.

The village side was in control early with Ray Naylor’s rink punishing Norm Box’s rink for any wayward bowls.

Ray played with John Moore, Dennis Patmore and Ian Kennedy, and after being five shots in front at lunch, continued to dominate, and finished 12 shots up at the conclusion.

The key to Ray’s rink winning was an end of six shots up, and just too many multiples.

At lunch Cardinia Waters was 12 shots in front, however from then on it was all bad news.

Jim Barrie’s rink was still in the game at lunch, being down by a single shot.

After that point they were badly mauled by the Lions outfit, eventually losing by 13 shots.

In a similar fashion, John Van Vugt’s rink led at lunch by nine shots, thereafter not being able to match Paul Currie’s team who dominated the last half of the game.

At end 17 the scores were level at 18-18, but dropping five on the next end proved fatal for Cardinia Waters.

Both these teams will be promoted to second division next season, and we can look forward to more cross-town rivalry.

With all pennant matches finished the focus now turns to concluding this season’s Club Championship games.
