GARFIELD GOLF

Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup Day was the first 30-degree day since March; followed up by a huge thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon with the Garfield golf course quickly soaking up the deluge to be in perfect playing condition for Saturday.

A record Saturday field of the 168 players presented for the first of three qualifying rounds of the 2023 Club Championships, with some excellent results coming in with a four-over par round of 73 required to finish in the money.

Dave Lawler returned to form getting the A Grade win with a round of nett 65, while Tym Davey – playing off scratch – had the best gross score with an excellent round of one-under 68.

Dylan Skinner had the day’s best nett score, getting the B Grade win with a round of 64, as well as having the best B Grade scratch score on a countback with a score of 80.

Paul Gough got the C Grade win with a round of nett 65, while John Hoare had the best scratch round with 84.

Jake Went won the D Grade event with a nett round of 68 on a countback, while Peter Korteman had the scratch win with a score of 91.

A total of 19 birdies were scored for the day on the par threes with the 11th giving up five of those.

On Thursday a field of 80 players turned out with veteran Terry Bull having the day’s best result getting the B Grade win with an excellent round of 44 points.

David Pateman beat his handicap to win the A Grade event with a final score of 40 points.

A final score of 35 points back to a countback was the number to finish in the money.

A total of 18 players were able to play to or better their handicap for the day, and Tony Mafodda scored a pair of birdies for his round.

However, the day’s highlight was provided by the veteran Graeme Martin whom arrived at the par-four seventh to find his ball in the greenside bunker for his third shot.

Big Deal you might say, but what was to happen thereafter provided the headline.

Martin smashed his bunker shot into the trees lining the sixth fairway then the ball ricochet back on the green in play some eight metres from the hole.

Martin then calmly dropped the testing put to finish the hole with a score of five…for three points.

Riveting stuff indeed sir.

A field of some 50 punters turned out for play on Cup Day with Shaun Hegarty having the best of it, getting the B Grade win with a score of 42 points.

Dean Shannon won the A Grade event with a score of 38 points.

A final score of 34 points was the number required to finish in the money.

Peter Marquis provided the day’s highlight by scoring an eagle the on the par five first.

However, the best result we have saved for last, with Tina Cowie posting a final winning Saturday Ladies score of nett 61 to lead the field after the first round of the Ladies Club Championships.
