Soccer hits fever pitch at Beaconhills

The Matilda’s success in the FIFA Women’s World Cup is inspiring young Beaconhills College students to not only pick up a soccer ball, but also a book.

Library staff at the College’s Berwick and Pakenham campuses report that soccer books – and sports books in general – are flying off the shelves faster than a Mary Fowler shot on goal.

Book Week Dress Up Day last week was a golden opportunity for students to head to the library and grab their favourite soccer book.

Year 3 Berwick Campus students Ella, Bailey, Kalana and Taylor were among the soccer enthusiasts.

Ella had a special reason to be excited.

She and her brother Archie were invited to attend the FIFA Women’s World Cup match on 2 August between Jamaica and Brazil at AAMI Park, as Comm Bank Mini Mates.

The family also attend the Matilda’s game against Denmark in Sydney.

Ella, who hopes to join a soccer team next year, said “I love going to watch a soccer match because the crowd goes wild when we get a goal and it is a very fun sport to play”.

Ella and Archie are pictured here after they were invited to walk out on the ground to meet the Brazilian players.
