GARFIELD GOLF
It was absolutely stunning weather this week at Garfield Golf Club with plenty of sunshine around Thursday and Saturday which ensured great-sized fields taking part.
Friday 28 was the warmest July date ever, so perhaps Jane (Bunn) was right about the El Niño taking place.
Bernie Clark was the headline grabber this week by notching up her seventh win from her last eight starts by winning both the Tuesday and Saturday ladies’ events.
On Saturday a field of 129 faced the starter with a final score of 32 points back to a count back required to finish in the money.
Gus Engley won the A Grade event, playing off his mark of just three, with a handicap round of 36 points by a count back from Harry Elyasie.
Peter Johnson, on the back of good recent form, won the B Grade event with a nice result of 40 points, two points clear of Ian Hopper in second place.
Malcolm Hirt won the C Grade event with a score of 38 points just the one point in front of Robert Toth.
But it was Rex Turner, also in form, that had the week’s best round with the D Grade win by scoring a huge total of 44 points…seven points to the next best in Tim Jeffrey in second place.
Just the six birdies were achieved for the day on the par threes.
Another good-sized field of 87 punters lined up on Thursday with, once again, a final score of 32 points back to a count back the number for a down the line prize.
The sweet swinging Graeme Pretty returned to the winner’s list with the A Grade win with a round of 39 points whilst Ian Nicholson won the B Grade event also with a round of 39 points defeating Paul Kaye and Ash Graham by three points.
Shirley McGrath won the C Grade event with a final score of 37 points, three shots clear of Alan Borch in the runners up stall.
The $5 competition on Monday continues to attract good-sized fields, this time with 65 players turning out.
Andrew Hale won the A Grade event with a handicap score of 36 points whilst Ron Parsons got the decision in a photo finish from Robert Mirfin with a score of 34 points.
Once again, a final score of 32 points back to a count back was good enough for a down the line result. Andrew Hale had a successful week by finishing second on Sunday then turning out on Monday and winning the A Grade event.
Next Saturday is the August Monthly Medal.
