Gurdwara visits parliament

Gurdwara Siri Guru Nanak Darbar (SGND), Officer, in collaboration with Pakenham MP Emma Vulin, organised a special trip to visit the Victorian Parliament on Thursday 6 July.

This unique excursion gave the children an enriching experience and insight into operation of state politics, such as how decisions are made, laws are passed, and how the government represents the interests of the people.

The attendees had an opportunity to explore historical artefacts, interact with knowledgeable guides, and engage in interactive sessions that enhanced their understanding of Victoria’s political history and processes.

Harpreet Singh from SGND said this visit was, “conceived in January when the Gurdwara celebrated Australia Day”.

“Our kids were helping organise the day and building several event management and planning skills.

“The attendees were impressed by the selfless volunteering of our youth and Emma Vulin invited the kids to visit the Parliament, the excursion was planned during school holidays and the weather was on our side.”

Randeep Singh, Gurdwara spokesman, said: “Our Gurdwara community believes in fostering inclusivity and celebrating diversity. This visit to the Victoria Parliament provided an opportunity for children from different backgrounds to come together, learn from one another, and embrace the rich cultural heritage that Victoria represents.”

This was Ms Vulin’s first time conducting a tour of Parliament; she took to Facebook to express her thanks to SGND.

“Today I was blessed to have some of the children from Gurdwara Siri Guru Nanak Darbar, Officer come to visit me at Parliament of Victoria,” she said.

“The children asked so many clever questions and it was also the first time I had participated in an official tour of Parliament. I learnt lots too!”
