GARFIELD GOLF

It was a real taste of winter at Garfield Golf Club this weekend with cold temperatures and plenty of showers – although it did become clearer on Saturday afternoon for the final round of the 2023 4BBB Par Championships.

Best in for the day of the 44 pairings was Tony Grayson and Robert Toth with a good score in the prevailing conditions of plus-9 giving them the 2023 title.

Overall, they were some five shots better than Scott Corbett and Andrew Went, while finishing outright third was Brett Dwyer and Robert Murphy with a total of plus-9 for the two rounds.

Paul Govaars and Grant McLure are two golfers in fine touch after great individual rounds last week.

They paired together to finish runners up on Saturday with a score of plus-7 defeating David Zaffarese and Damien Martini via a count back.

A final score of plus-4 or better was required for a ball down the line.

On a difficult day for scoring just eight birdies were achieved on the par threes.

Thursday is becoming quite popular, this time with a good size field of 82 players.

George Gray had the best score for the week, winning C Grade with a great round of 43 points.

Harry Thomas got the B Grade win with a round of 38 points whilst Mark Johnson won the major grade with a round of 39 points.

A final score of 34 points back to a count back was required to finish in the money.

Roger Parker, a visitor from Deep Creek, won Monday’s event with a score of 38 points out of another good field of 47 players.

Jeanette Mitchell is the club’s current in-form number-one, this time with a Tuesday win with a stroke score of 71.

On Saturday there was an overflow event of single par contested by 22 players with Mick Matthews breaking a run of outs with a winning score of plus-3.

The vet’s tour arrived at Traralgon on May 15 with no Garfield players featuring in the money, however the course presented in good condition and everyone enjoyed their lasagne lunch.

It’s now time for the vet’s winter break with the next event scheduled for Monday September 11 at Moe via a 9am shot gun start.

The new third teeing ground has been in play during recent Saturdays and with the tee tucked right up against the boundary fence I expect plenty of balls to be sailing out of bounds with the only playable option to aim left side of the fairway.

Next Saturday is a game of single stableford for both the men and ladies.
