Frankie and Jones claim Four-Ball crown

Glorious conditions greeted players for the second and final round of the 2023 Four-Ball Championships at Deep Creek Golf Club on Saturday.

Finding themselves four shots back after the opening round, it was Dean Jones and Frankie Chiu who emerged victorious with a second-round gross score of 77.

Their five-over par score proved too good for runners-up Rob Nobelius and Harry Elyasie, who began the day locked with Jones and Chiu but fired a seven-over-par 79.

Jones and Chiu were the best score in for the day, and their two-round total of (76-77) 153 secured the Four-Ball title for this year.

Royce Thompson (19) and John McDonald (20) had the best handicap score in round two with a six-under par 66.

Meanwhile, a stableford event was also played on Saturday with John Hutcheon (13) firing the best score of the day – 41 points – to win A Grade by three shots from Rod Walker (20) on 38 points.

Frank Leontini (23) dominated B Grade, scoring 40 points for a four-shot victory over Rod Beard (27).

Down the lines went to Les Jones (22) and Robin McCrae (16) on 37 points, and to Liz Garvey (42) with 35 points.

Nearest the pin went to Colin Maclean (3m) on the 16th.

The golfing week kicked on Monday with a Par event, with a two-player war taking place between Keith Barrot (39) and David McMahon (9).

It was Barrot (39) who came out on top via a countback after both players carded the impressive scores of +2.

Other players to show some form in the early part of the week included Michael Banger and Pat Ellerton, who finished square with the card to lead the ball down the line winners.

Others to claim prizes included William Carmichael, Ron Parsons and Frankie Chiu -1, and Julie Cheng, Chris Mc Connell, Bobby Edwards, Stewart MacDonald and Glenn Charles -2.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd: Levi Sua (2.70m) and 16th: Harry Bolotin (3.13m).

A winning score of 38 points was required to win both grades of Wednesday’s stableford competition with Bob Naismith shooting that number to score an A Grade countback victory over Tony Sheahan.

Ted Schreuder also fired 38 points to claim the B Grade crown, three shots better than runner-up Kel Trickey.

Down the lines went to David Bell, Royce Thompson and Colin Crowie, who scored 37 points, while Neville Taylor, Harry Elyasie and John Kingman also claimed prizes with par-rounds of 36 points.

The SuperComp Back 9 winner was Bob Naismith.

Nearest the pin went to Michael Banger (5.5m) on the second hole.

The Ladies stepped out to compete for the coveted Foursomes Championships on Thursday and it was Liz Garvey and Julie Cheng who took home the top prize with a solid round of 75.5.

Runners up were Norma Crebbin and Helen Drummond on 77, while Nola Kerslake (58) won the nine-hole event with 15 points.

The best score of the golfing week was kept to last with Aiden Elliot (38) scoring a whopping 46 points to make a one-act affair of Sunday’s stableford competition.

Impressive totals were also recorded in the down the lines, with youngster Blaze Bester scoring 40 points to claim the runner up prize in front of Bodhi Leguier on 38, and Mathew Elliot and Nick Gray on 35 points.
