DEEP CREEK GOLF

A stiff breeze was no match for a brilliant round of golf played by Peter Reilly at Deep Creek Golf Club on Saturday.

Reilly, playing off a handicap of eight, scored a super-impressive 43 points to break clear of an otherwise compact field.

Reilly’s great round of 73 off the stick – one over par – secured the in-form golfer a five-shot victory over Graham Brennan (25), who defeated Glenn Rees for the runner-up prize via a countback.

David Leek, Levi Sua and David Nagel, all playing in the same group, had 37 points to lead the ball down the line winners, with Anthony Kemsley 36 and Brian Webster 34 also claiming prizes, along with Graeme Durran, Shane Franzi, Ron Zomer and Leigh Cullen with 33 points.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd: Scott Irwin (1.31m) and 16th: Harry Elyasie (2.88m).

A huge week of competition golf began back on Monday with Club President Rob Nobelius (14) continuing a really solid run of form, scoring 41 points for a one-shot victory over the equally-impressive Tom McDermott (23).

Balls down the line were picked up by Tom Reid 39, Frank Leontini and Chris Dalton 38, Delanie Lewis, Ron Seamer and Bobby Edwards 37, and Les Jones and Carol Beard with 36 points.

Edwards had a good day out, winning nearest the pin on the second (2m), with Michael Banger (2.6 m) getting closest on the 16th.

A Par competition greeted the Wednesday mid-week golfers and it was John Curtin (16) who handled the conditions best, carding a rock-solid score of 4-up to win A Grade from the big-hitting Levi Sua (11), who finished 2-up.

There was also a great battle in B Grade, with Pat Ellerton (23) finishing 1-up to just edge out ‘Scooter-Man’ Terry Bull (28) who ended his day square with the card.

Down the lines went to Ron Seamer and Geoff Percival with 1 up, Daryl O’Grady and Andrew Hale who finished square, and to Graham Brennan, Carol Beard, Kevin Sutton, Roger Parker, Harry Elyasie and Noel Bonne, who all signed off on scores of 1-down.

Percival had a brilliant start to his round, winning the SuperComp Front 9 with a mammoth 5 Up, which included the nearest the pin on the second hole (0.75m). Levi Sua was the other sharp-shooter for the day (1.14m), with his brilliant tee shot ending closest on the 16th.

Julie Cheng (31) played exactly to her handicap, scoring 36 points to win Thursday’s ladies event, with Anne Donovan, Liz Garvey and Leah Barker all in hot pursuit.

A stableford event was also held on Friday last week, with Carol Beard (27) playing right at the top of her game to score 39 points for a two-shot triumph over the consistent Glenn Rees 37.

And the golfing week concluded on Sunday, where lovely mild conditions gave all players a chance to hit the scoreboard hard.

The player to do that best was Luke Addis (18) who scored 40 points for a one-shot victory over Daniel Exposito.

Also gaining balls down the line were Kyle McCrae 37, and Darren Grayson, Jason Addis and Simon Fay with 36 points.
