CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS
MIDWEEK REPORT
Side one played Willow Lodge at home last Tuesday and what a game it was!
Willow Lodge took the game up to Cardinia Waters during the mornings play, but not to be denied the home side marched right back into the game after the break.
Two rinks that had been beaten before lunch upped the ante, and overtook Willow Lodge.
The winner of the day came down to the last end of the day.
Bryan Stephen’s rink had that one end to play, and Cardinia Waters were down by just one shot.
Unfortunately for Cardinia Waters they lost that last end by three shots, giving Willow Lodge the 10 points for shots up, and two points for one rink up.
Cardinia Waters grabbed four points for their two rinks up, and those points helped the village stay in third position, just ahead, ironically, of Willow Lodge.
Only two points separate these teams, with Cardinia Waters in third place and Willow Lodge in fourth.
Bill Hite’s rink was best on the day, he played with Stephen Hale, Dennis Patmore and Robert Mitchell.
They won their game 21-15, after being down by seven shots at the lunch break.
Similarly, John Van Vugt’s rink had to stage a comeback to win after being well down at lunchtime.
A five on the seventeenth end was vital to their success, winning 21-19.
John played with Ray Naylor, Tom Gogan and Therese Mitchell.
Next week side one travels to the Dandenong Club for their round 12 game.
Dandenong are in second place, with Cardinia Waters only one game behind.
Last time these two sides met Dandenong took the points.
There are only three games left now, before the finals, and of course the village side are keen to be there.
Side two travelled to Edithvale, but suffered a hefty loss.
Two rinks were well beaten, the only shining light being Stuart Tokely’s rink which won 23-17.
Stuart played with Ian Kennedy, Brian Byrne and Terry Nye.
The ladder looks very interesting in this section with Dandenong Club in third place on 70 points, behind them are Edithvale on 68, and Cardinia Waters on 67.
Cardinia Waters side two also play Dandenong Club at home next Tuesday.
Last time these teams met the villagers came out on top by 17 shots, under the roof at Dandenong. So, this interesting game will be crucial to both teams hope of playing finals.
SATURDAY PENNANT
Cardinia Waters strolled over to their near neighbours Pakenham to play their pennant game last Saturday.
Once again, an early start was organised to avoid the heat of the afternoon.
Pakenham had a good reason to perform well in this home game.
Last time they met, Cardinia Waters delivered one of only two losses for Pakenham 2 this season, grabbing victory on the last end.
This time the Lions won the game by 13 shots but didn’t have it all their own way.
Whilst they won on three rinks, one was by the barest margin of one shot.
Bad luck for Bill Hite’s rink who were right in the game before the last end.
John Van Vugt’s rink were strong all day, and survived a late flurry from their opponents to win by five shots.
John played with John Moore, Dennis Patmore and Robert Mitchell, and all players helped garnish the win.
With two games left before the finals commence it now seems difficult for Cardinia Waters to expect to play finals.
Their loss, and a big win by Upwey Tecoma, means Cardinia Waters are replaced in the four by that team.
Next week the village side play Mulgrave Country home at home.
It is virtually a must win, but given Mulgrave are in second place, just behind Pakenham, a win for Cardinia Waters may just not be there.
After that an away game at Upwey Tecoma will round out the home and away part of the season.
What is clear is that Pakenham, Mulgrave Country Club and Berwick will play finals, and the fourth spot is up for grabs, between Cardinia Waters and Upwey Tecoma.
