CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS
MIDWEEK REPORT
Side one travelled to Narre Warren to face the league leaders on their new undercover bowling greens last Tuesday.
Cardinia Waters knew their opponents were very good especially at home.
And that is how the game panned out, with Narre Warren winning comfortably in the end by 35 shots and taking all three rinks.
Cardinia Waters did stand up to their opponents, with two rinks getting within two shots during the game, but unfortunately one rink bled profusely and were beaten by twenty shots.
The value of the undercover greens was seen on Tuesday, when a sudden rain squall swept through the district, stopping play on many outdoor greens.
Not so at Narre Warren where all that was needed was turning on the lights and play continued unabated.
The next game for side one will be at home on January 17, and they play bottom team Chelsea.
Side two also played a Narre Warren team at home.
The weather intervened on this game, and after the rain squall mentioned earlier play on the outdoor Cardinia Waters green was abandoned.
Fortunately, enough ends had been completed to enable a result, and Cardinia Waters were declared winners two rinks to one, and nineteen shots up.
Best winners were Len Judge, Jenny Edmonds, Paul Brindle and new player Lorraine Devine.
They won easily 22-10.
At one point in the game, they led 18-1, from then on they just coasted over the line.
Also winning but by ten shots were Kerry Lewis, Stuart Tokely, Brian Byrne and Ian Kennedy.
Returning to the bowling green after the Christmas break side two will be away to Churchill Waverley Golf Club.
Hopefully by then the weather should be fine and warm for the game on the turf green at Rowville.
Churchill Waverley Golf are on top, and Cardinia Waters are fourth, but there is only one game between them, so the village players should be considered a chance.
SATURDAY PENNANT
Cardinia Waters played Noble Park 2, on their home turf last Saturday.
On a day that had a very strong and gusty easterly blowing across the green, both sides struggled to find line and length.
The village side however ended up victorious, but the feisty Parker’s didn’t go down without a fight. They managed to win two rinks but Cardinia Waters won the day on shots up.
Cardinia Waters had one really standout rink which included Bill Hite, Tom Gogan, Kay Hale and John Moore.
Their final score was 37-8, after leading 14-5 at the afternoon tea bell. It wasn’t so much how good they played, but how disjointed their opposition was.
The other winning rink was Bryan and Marion Stevens, Del Dance and Ian Kennedy who won 26-15, after being in control all afternoon.
Unlucky to lose was John Van Vugt’s rink that were 18-18 with one end to play, but dropped a two on the last end.
Pennant takes a break now for the festive season, and on return Cardinia Waters will host the game against Berwick at home.
Five games are still to be played before the finals, and it’s a big uphill task for Cardinia Waters who have to play all the teams above them on the ladder.
The last home game will be tough, playing Upwey/Tecoma on their sticky green up in the hills.
Cardinia Waters still hold fifth place on the ladder, and have some chance of grabbing fourth spot.
Season’s greetings to all bowlers and readers alike, and a special thanks to the staff at the Pakenham Gazette for their great coverage of lawn bowls this season.
