POLICE popped into Lakeside Lutheran College yesterday (Wednesday) to highlight the importance of helmet wearing.
Students were given a talk on road and bike safety as part of Pakenham Police’s Bike Safety month initiative.
Senior Constable Helen Marsham said Lakeside Neighbourhood Watch donated the helmets for the day but students who bought their own would go into a draw to keep one of the helmets.
Pakenham Police Acting Senior Sergeant Mick Wright said it was important to raise awareness about bike safety issues, especially the wearing of helmets.
“Last year 14 cyclists were killed in Victoria,” he said.
“Statistics show helmets reduce the risk of injury by 60 per cent.”
Acting Sen Sgt Wright said parents had an important role in ensuring their children wore helmets and rode responsibly.
