Local community groups are working to reduce crime in the Cardinia Shire thanks to a Safe Plate Day held at Bunnings Pakenham.

For a gold coin donation, Victoria Police together with the Cardinia Mens Shed and Neighbourhood Watch Victoria are replacing old number plate screws with new, anti-theft screws.

Neighbourhood Watch chairperson David Farrelly said it was a simple way to reduce crime in the neighbourhood.

“It went really well, there was a great turnout and we had a fantastic reaction online seeing a proactive approach to help prevent crime,“ Mr Farrelly said.

“Neighbourhood Watch has been doing these types of event for 30 years and the number one item stolen from cars is a number plate and the reason is because they are then used by criminals to commit other serious crimes like robberies to avoid detection.

“Reducing theft of number plate has a big impact on reducing crime.“

Safe Plate Day was held on Saturday 12 March.
