Fiery end to holiday

Campers have had a fiery end to their holiday after a caravan caught on fire on the South Gippsland Highway, Monday 31 January.

Tooradin CFA first lieutenant Tony Riley said firefighters were called to the scene at 12.50pm to find a caravan fully alight on the side of the highway at Monomeith Road, in Monomeith.

He said the campers were returning home from a holiday at Phillip Island when the van they were towing caught on fire.

Fortunately no one was injured.

Mr Riley said the fire may have started from the wheel hubs before destroying most of the body of the caravan.

“We had it fully under control in about five minutes,” he said.

“Truck drivers had stopped to help detach the van from the ute before we arrived.”

Mr Riley said the crew from Tooradin were initially called to the wrong address, at Monomeith Street in Tooradin rather than Monomeith Road in Monomeith.

“It’s a good reminder to people to know where you are when you’re calling Triple 000,” he said.

“There’s a benefit for local people attending local jobs because we knew where Monomeith Road was.”
