On 30 June this year the Rotary Club of Pakenham celebrated its 60th anniversary, which also meant celebrating 60 years of service to the community
in and around Pakenham.
As part of the celebration, it was decided to plant 60 trees, one for each year, to commemorate the occasion and for the beautification of the area.
60 maple trees were purchased but, due to Covid-19 lockdown, the trees were unable to be planted until now.
On Sunday 28 November, with assistance of staff from the Shire of Cardinia, the trees were planted as an avenue in the Barry Wallis Gardens in Duncan Drive,
Pakenham.
The site was chosen by the council and the Rotarians involved in planting the trees agree that it is an ideal location.
The gardens are often used for weddings and the avenue of autumn blaze maples will greatly enhance the beauty of the setting.
It is a fitting location, Barry Wallis served the Shire of Pakenham (Berwick) for 32 years, 21 years as shire secretary, he was also a member of the Rotary Club of
Pakenham for several years, serving in many positions including president in 1977-1978.
After the trees were planted Barry’s wife Truus and some other members of the Wallis family paid a visit to the site and were thrilled with the improvement the trees have made to the gardens, which are one of Pakenham’s hidden gems.
