Outgoing mayor shares emotion

Cardinia Shire councillor Brett Owen was overcome with emotion while recapping his term as mayor in the first council meeting led by newly appointed mayor Jeff Springfield.

Thanking his wife and family for their support during his year as mayor, Cr Owen fought back tears.

“Thanks to my wife Jackie and my amazing three children Max, Will and Maggie,” he said.

“Like for everyone it was a challenging time working from home. During my time Jackie completed her Masters so I’m very proud of her.

“Once again my children were very helpful whether it was filming my online videos, being in the videos themselves or joining and supporting me at events.”

He recalled his final duties as mayor, officially opening the Kath Roberts Reserve and Keith Eweson Playground and thanked the community, fellow councillors, staff and senior management for their support.

New mayor Jeff Springfield thanked Cr Owen for his service and presented him with a portfolio of his achievements over the past year.

“We have not just had to suffer through Covid-19 issues but had Mother Nature play her part sending us several storm events which we are still trying to recover from,“ Mayor Springfield said.

“I would like to thank you on behalf of the council for your stewardship during this unprecedented time.”
