School stitches up quilting awards

By MATT MALE

STUDENTS at Beaconhills College have won big at the recent Victorian Quilters Australia Quilt Expo.
Two quilts were entered into the primary and secondary section of the quilt expo at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in July.
Students have been learning sewing since February this year.
Helen Comport, founder of Quilts of Valour Australia – which makes quilts for soldiers wounded or suffering the effects of war and immediate families of fallen soldiers – introduced the weekly patchwork sessions.
The 45-minute lessons each Wednesday began with learning how to use an electric sewing machine and sewing quarter-inch seams.
Within weeks, students created their own iPad bags, followed by patch blocks to make into a quilt with sashing.
Two quilts were entered into the expo and the school was delighted to find out both quilts had received awards, with the prize being pure wool wadding.
The quilt awards were recognised at a school assembly on Tuesday 18 August.
Students are currently learning a challenging block design which they hope to join into a quilt to award to a veteran on Remembrance Day this year.
