NOT even the freezing conditions on Sunday morning could stop the Pakenham Lions Youth Girls team roaring into life.
A pride of six took to the field as the first ever Youth Girls to wear the maroon, blue and yellow in the South East Juniors. Alisha, Daniella, Gracie, Annette, Abbey and Isabella made their mark on the match against Timbarra and nothing could stop the determined Lions from making the most of the clash.
While the result was a bit one-sided in the end – with the older, more experienced Timbarra Tornadoes kicking a bag of goals – the first outing was a positive one for Pakenham as the female game starts to blossom in the town.
“Awesome – it was an adrenaline rush and great fun,” Pakenham coach Nello Zuccolo said.
“This is our very first game, very first girls’ team and couldn’t be more proud.”
Zuccolo wanted to thank the girls, the helpers and the club for being a part of the inaugural side and ensured there would be great things to come from the Youth Girls teams at Pakenham.
The coach encouraged any Pakenham area girls interested in having a run-around to get down and give Youth Girls under-12s a go.
“Bring them on – we’d love to see anyone come and play in the team – it’s so much fun it’s unbelievable.”
Pakenham joins Timbarra, Beaconsfield, Cranbourne and Narre Warren as South East Juniors teams with under-12 Youth Girls sides and the league has confirmed that if anyone else is interested in starting up a side, it will be added for the remainder of the 2015 season.
If anyone is interested in joining up to play for the Lions, contact the club on pjfc@bigpond.com or come down to Toomuc Reserve on Friday evenings at 5pm for the team’s training – also including the current 13-18 year old Youth Girls squad.
