STUDENTS at Beaconhills College could be proud of more than just their running efforts at a recent cross-country event.
Each year the ‘Run for Bangladesh’ is held to support the education of underprivileged Bangladeshi students, through the charity organisation CO-ID (Co-operation in Development.)
This year’s event was held at the college on Friday 17 April.
Over its involvement with the charity, Beaconhills has helped to raise funds to build a school and pre-school.
The charity is responsible for the construction of 41 schools and five pre-schools in one of the poorest regions of Bangladesh.
Beaconhills’ photographer and archivist John Waterhouse, who is also a member of the CO-ID committee, said the fund-raising was a sustained effort.
“We need to raise $8000 a year to pay for the wages of four teachers at the Beaconhills school (called Morhab) along with materials,” he said.
Last year’s fund-raising effort funded the wages of the teachers, as well as teacher training and an administration centre to store school supplies.
Donations are still being finalised for this year’s race, but organisers are hoping to top last year’s effort.
Money is also collected at the college’s eight house church services throughout the year.
