SES calls for help

Narre Warren SES volunteer Ray Miller urges local residents to attend the unit's open day on Saturday, 7 October.Narre Warren SES volunteer Ray Miller urges local residents to attend the unit’s open day on Saturday, 7 October.

IF you would like to be part of the local community and help save lives, then the Narre Warren State Emergency Service wants you.
Ray Miller, officer of administration and an operational member with the Narre Warren SES, has put the call out for fresh volunteers as the unit prepares to hold an information day early next month.
The Hampton Park local said there were many benefits to volunteering with the State Emergency Service.
“You learn skills you can use in your everyday life and in your paid work,” Mr Miller said.
“All new members need is a commitment to learn these new skills and to attend a certain percentage of training to keep their skills up to date.”
The unit is looking for members who are available during the day or evening to be part of its duty crew.
It is also keen to attract people who can assist with administration duties and fundraising.
Mr Miller said one of the greatest benefits to being a volunteer was that people actually said thanks and really appreciated the volunteer’s efforts during their time of need. He has attended numerous calls for help during his time with the Narre Warren SES. These have included the flooding of homes and even streets, searches for missing persons, calls for help when cars collide with buildings, storm repairs to roofs and chainsawing fallen trees.
“It’s great. We learn new skills, we put those skills into practice on the job and at training. We enjoy helping others, it’s a really good feeling,” Mr Miller said.
Anyone who would like to join the crew or who wants more information can attend the information day on Saturday, 7 October at 10am.
The Narre Warren SES is at 36A Vesper Drive, Narre Warren.
