Lock up or look out

PAKENHAM is in the top 10 Melbourne suburbs for vehicle theft according to new research from the RACV.
RACV General Manager Insurance Paul Northey said the figures showed that Pakenham, Cranbourne, Dandenong, Narre Warren and Berwick were all in the top 20 in terms of the local areas with the highest number of vehicle theft claims.
“On average, 17 RACV members living in metropolitan Melbourne are the victims of car theft every week,” Mr Northey said.
“Residents should ensure that they always lock their vehicle before leaving it unattended, even for a short time.
“While some areas may have a higher number of theft claims than others, it doesn’t mean people can drop their guard.
“Most vehicles were reported stolen between 6am and 6pm, and this is an important reminder that thieves are opportunistic and will strike anywhere.”
Overall, 921 claims of theft were lodged by RACV members in metropolitan Melbourne, while state wide 1111 vehicle theft claims were received.
With the average vehicle theft claim costing $8000, Mr Northey encouraged motorists to check that they were adequately covered for the cost of replacing their vehicle, or repairing the damage from an attempted theft.
“While having a vehicle stolen causes a major inconvenience, not having adequate insurance cover can compound this by creating unnecessary financial stress,” Mr Northey said.
“Vehicle owners should double check whether their policy provides the right level of cover for their needs.
