Smoke alarms save home

By DANIELLE GALVIN

SMOKE detectors alerted residents in a Racecourse Road home of a fire in the roof on Tuesday evening.
Cardinia Group Officer Phil Craig said the fire had burnt through a section of ducted heating at the Pakenham home just before 5pm.
“As a result of that, some of the rafters in the roof became involved and the vents fell out of the ceiling space area and some of the rooms in the house were damaged,” he said.
“The fire was not suspicious,” Mr Craig said.
A fire investigator visited the home on Wednesday to try and determine the cause of the fire.
“The cause is not known at this stage, residents were home at the time,” Mr Craig said.
“Their smoke detector went off, which is an example of how they work to warn people that there is a fire in the building,” he said.
Crews from Pakenham, Nar Nar Goon and Toomuc attended and left about 6.30pm last night.
The eastern side of Racecourse Road towards Kooweerup was blocked off by police to allow the fire crews to bring the blaze under control.
