Sights set for Binning

By JARROD POTTER

ALREADY playing a major part in the Casey Comets women’s soccer team defence at only 16-years of age, it came as no surprise that Rachel Binning was selected to anchor School Sports Victoria’s under-19 girls’ soccer team.
Binning from Berwick, will line up for her fifth Victorian team and hopes success will come Victoria’s way this time around.
“It’s pretty exciting, this is my fifth year,” Binning said.
“Started when I was 11 or 12.
“Always liked going away with the girls which is heaps of fun and getting to meet some of the other girls from the other states as well.
“We came third I think twice before and this year we’ve got a good team – we haven’t trained together yet, but from the tryouts we were pretty good.”
Binning’s hopes for the carnival are for Victoria to snare that elusive title and also on a personal note, for her to gain selection in the All-Australian squad.
Formerly playing for Berwick City, Binning switched across to the Comets a few years back and has relished the opportunities Women’s Premier League soccer has to offer.
“I used to play for Berwick City when I first started and came to Casey three years ago,” Binning said.
“It’s really good – it’s fun and Ian (Williamson), the coach, is good – the matches are heaps different and very fast.”
“We’re ok this season – we’re winning some, losing some – but the second half of the season we’ll be better and we’ll definitely beat some of the better teams.”
The School Sports Australia Soccer Championships will be held in Canberra, ACT from Saturday 3 August to Friday 9 August.
