PAKENHAM’S central transport hub will receive an upgrade including five new Protective Services Officers (PSOs) as well as a $250,000 grant to revitalise Bourke Park.
On Monday morning, Cardinia Shire councillors joined Victoria Police, Bass MP Ken Smith and council staff to announce the revamp of the park opposite the railway station.
PSOs started at the station on Tuesday evening.
Cr Jodie Owen, a former criminologist, was beaming at the announcement after calling for an improvement to the area particularly the park and the station during the council elections.
Cr Owen said the strategic planners at council had worked hard during the application process and had involved the councillors in the new plans for the revitalisation of the park.
She thanked them for their hard work and the State Government for listening to the people of Pakenham.
“This development and the PSOs will go a long way to improving safety,” Cr Owen said.
Cr Kate Lempriere said the park had been looking “revolting” and she was thrilled with the announcement.
Mr Smith said the funding would go towards providing new toilets, parks and gardens to “open it up” and make a safe, community place.
“The upgrading of Bourke Park completes total safety design strategy for public transport users and will benefit families with a new playground and public toilets,” Mr Smith said.
“People committed to fitness will enjoy the addition of paths and lighting and the installation of tables, chairs and shelters will promote a year round usable park in the heart of Pakenham.”
Mr Smith said the funding and the PSOs would improve the overall safety in the area.
