THERE was a strong sense of the return of “old Pakenham” at the inaugural Cardinia Relay for Life event last weekend.
Cardinia Shire councillor George Blenkhorn is on the committee behind the 18-hour walk-a-thon and said he was thrilled when told the event reminded people of how Pakenham used to be.
The event attracted 441 participants and $42,600 was raised.
“I was really pleased,” Cr Blenkhorn said.
“One of the most interesting comments from a couple of people was that this is like old Pakenham.
“There was a real sense of community.”
Some 19 teams took part in the relay around the Toomuc Reserve.
“I spoke to people Friday night and Saturday morning and people said it was great. Six teams have already signed up for next year’s one, although we haven’t agreed to hold it, but there’s little doubt that we won’t run it again,” he said.
“I must thank the volunteers who helped set up, the sponsors and those who helped provide equipment.
“And most of all the participants – without them it wouldn’t be possible.”
Cr Blenkhorn said the candlelight ceremony was particularly moving.
The Cancer Council’s Gemma Rix said the current total raised through the relay was $42,600 but it would creep up over the next few weeks as some teams had fund-raisers planned for after the event.
“I would like to thank the organising committee for dedicating their time to putting on a fantastic event and the community of Cardinia for wholeheartedly supporting the inaugural Cardinia Relay For Life – we can’t wait for the 2014 event,” she said.
