PAKENHAM resident Cyril Hunt is concerned about the lack of respect people are showing for the local environment by dumping clothing near rubbish bins in Pakenham.
He is particularly concerned about the dumping occurring behind the shops and between the railway line.
“The shire do a fantastic job at keeping the place look nice and then people do this,” Mr Hunt said.
“Some of these clothes, people would be very happy to wear,” he said.
“There is really no excuse for this; they could take the clothes to the op shop bins or the op shops when they are open,” he said.
Mr Hunt acknowledged shop proprietors were doing their best to discourage the dumping but it was still happening.
The bins are clearly marked as being “shop rubbish only” and show warnings about fines for dumping.
The 67-year-old pensioner who raises money each year for the Royal Children’s Hospital, where he spent time as a child, said he was impressed with efforts to keep the Main Street looking good.
“It’s a nice town and then you have this stuff blowing around, and most people want it to be tidy,” he said.
Cardinia Shire’s manager of Local Laws, Alan Giachin said infringement notices could be issued to people seen dumping rubbish of any kind.
