Remember the need to weed

NOW that the warmer weather is here and gardens are springing back into life, it is also the peak season for weeds.
Residents have been reminded that, apart from looking unsightly, weeds are the greatest threat to the City of Casey’s environment.
City of Casey manager of engineering and environmental services David Richardson said a weed was any plant that was out of place and in worst case scenarios weeds could cause local extinctions, by out-competing indigenous plants for space, light and nutrients.
“With the onset of warmer weather now is the time to identify and target weeds on your property.”
Mr Richardson noted some of the weeds treatable at this time of the year included blackberry, agapanthus and sweet pittosporum.
“It is estimated that only seven per cent of the municipality now supports remnant indigenous vegetation, of which a large proportion is moderately to severely degraded.
“By managing weeds on your private property you can help the City of Casey prevent further weed spread into our high-conservation areas,” said Mr Richardson.
“For recommendations on the most suitable chemical to use for each weed please contact your local retailer-nursery,” he said.
