WORKS at housing estate Cardinia Lakes were brought to a halt on Tuesday when an excavator dug too far and ruptured a gas pipe.
The excavator was in the process of digging a manmade lake at the estate when it struck the pipe, causing a leak and bringing local police and firefighters to the site.
CFA crews from Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon were called at 3.50pm on Tuesday to the site on Windermere Boulevard.
The strong wind meant the situation was not dangerous, with most of the gas blowing away.
Fire crews surveyed the scene until gas and fuel officers came to fix the problem.
There were no houses nearby.
