THE Berwick Miners junior gridiron team beat the previously undefeated Croydon Rangers on Sunday at the Miners’ home ground in Endeavour Hills.
The Miners came into the game with three wins and one loss. But the Miners’ defence came out hard with extreme pressure in the Rangers’ backfield and in the the first minute Kyle Hoskings tackled the Rangers’ quarterback, causing a fumble which was recovered by the Miners.
The Miners’ aggressive running backs James Styles and Anthony Igmen each scored a touchdown and wide receiver Matthew Turner found the endzone for the extra point.
The Rangers fought back, also scoring two touchdowns and an extra point, which resulted in a score of 14- all at half-time.
In the second half the Miners’ quarterback Sam Walker passed to wide receiver Steve Tognazzini, who ran 70 yards for a touchdown. Then Styles exploded through the Rangers’ defence for the extra point.
The Miners’ defence managed to shut out the Rangers, not allowing them near their
end zone. Some of the lights in the Miners’ defence were Hoskings, who seemed to be always there to make the tackle, and Cameron Neale with his superb coverage of the Rangers’ passing game.
Both teams played extremely well but the Miners won 22-14.
The win put the Miners on top of the ladder and with two more games in the regular season the Miners would have to win both to secure home advantage for the playoffs.
