Kids in flying start

It was especially a treat for the school’s Year 11 physics students, as they had the opportunity to study how helicopters are able to fly and how pilots can control their flight as part of their aviation and aerospace studies.
Organiser of the event, physics teacher Rob Zreczycki, said it was a brilliant day for the whole school, especially for the students in the physics class.
“The students got an enormous amount out of it – these are the sort of things they read about in their textbooks and study the theory of, but seeing a real helicopter land and seeing it puts the theory in a real life context,” Mr Zreczycki said.
The crew, which consisted of Chief Petty Officer Phil Crick, Lieutenant Trine Themsen and Sub-Lieutenant James Williams, opened the doors and allowed the physics students to explore the cockpit and engines.
Their hour-long visit also gave them the chance to go through the mechanics and talk about how each part of the helicopter functions.
“They did an outstanding job, explaining various technical aspects and scientific principles, bringing real meaning into the theory that students have covered in class,” Mr Zreczycki said.
“The event was a huge success and the students are still talking about it.”
