A GROUP of walkers celebrated seven years of keeping fit and having fun.
About 50 Westfield Walkers have been meeting every Wednesday and Friday morning for a 45-minute exercise session.
A trained leader from the YMCA Casey Arc meets the walkers at 7.45am, before the centre starts trade. Together they do warm-up exercises, walk around the mall from 8am until 8.30am and have a 15-minute cool down.
Volunteer Paul Chamings, 75, has been making sure the one-kilometre lap of the mall has been safe for walkers since the group began seven years ago.
“I help set up the walk and make a trip around the shopping centre to make sure it’s safe,” he said.
Mr Chamings said there were people of all ages participating in the walking group, and said it was a healthy and social outing.
“It’s an enjoyable walk at a good location,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter what the weather is outside – stinking hot or freezing cold – the shopping centre is a good dry area.”
Mr Chamings says many walkers meet for a cup of coffee after a walk and many friendships have been formed.
Anyone wanting to join the Westfield Walkers can collect a registration form from a concierge desk and attend the walks on Wednesday or Friday mornings.
