Recognition for volunteers

By Lia Bichel
MUCH of their work is done in the dark, so it’s easy to see how SES work can go unnoticed.
But at the Actively Diverse celebration in Doveton on Australia Day, Narre Warren SES volunteers were recognised for their continuing dedication and service to the local area.
Narre Warren SES controller Tim Howell said he wanted to thank the volunteers for their efforts.
“It was a way of saying thank you to the volunteers for their hard work in the community and their commitment to community safety when there is an emergency,” Mr Howell said.
“A lot of the time we are in the background because most of the work we do is during a stormy night.”
Mr Howell said about 30 SES volunteers at Narre Warren, aged between 20 and 65, felt appreciated at the big event.
“It was great to have that recognition on Australia Day,” he said. “It made us feel like a bigger part of the nation.”
From last October until the end of last month, the Narre Warren SES attended 571 incidents. Many members of the group are now helping out with flood relief.
