RESIDENTS of Olive Gardens Retirement Village are frustrated over works to the footpath on their street.
Barry, who lives in a retirement unit on Olive Road, Eumemmerring, said residents were given no notification of the roadworks.
“Being in a retirement village, we thought we’d get some notification, but none whatsoever,” he said.
However, City of Casey manager of roads and construction Robert Kriek said all residents of Olive Road were notified of the works.
City of Casey is replacing the footpath, kerb and channel, and vehicle crossing on Olive Road as part of its annual road rehabilitation program.
Mr Kriek said the concrete works would take about six weeks and re-asphalting of the road will be completed at a later date.
Barry said residents woke on 9 January to the sound of trucks, which started ripping up the footpath.
The works started on the footpath opposite the retirement village and in a week’s time will commence on the side closest to the units, limiting vehicle and pedestrian access.
Barry said the roadworks made getting in and out of their street and units difficult, which is concerning when ambulances need frequent access.
“While some disruption to local residents is unfortunately unavoidable, council’s contractors will endeavour to keep inconvenience to a minimum,” Mr Kriek said.
He said vehicle and pedestrian access to the retirement village would be disrupted for a short period of time while works were being undertaken across the entrance to the village.
“However, access for ambulances and other vehicles will be maintained at all other times,” he said.
When residents contacted the council last week, nobody was willing or able to provide any information, Barry said.
“A council officer has spoken with several residents at the Olive Garden Retirement Village and their concerns have been taken into consideration,” Mr Kriek said.
