CASEY residents undertook a detox of a different kind by detoxing their homes.
The City of Casey and Sustainability Victoria ran the Detox Your Home event during December last year. Residents were encouraged to safely dispose of potentially dangerous and unwanted household chemical products.
“It is fantastic that so many Casey residents have chosen to dispose of potentially harmful household chemical products in a responsible and environmentally-sensitive manner,” City of Casey Mayor Shar Balmes said.
More than 500 residents took part, diverting more than 24.2 tonnes of potentially harmful chemicals from landfill.
Chemicals included paints, oils, gas cylinders, batteries, fuels and thinners.
Sustainability Victoria chief executive officer Anita Roper said the event helped residents, the council and the environment. “The safe disposal of these products protects our homes and prevents the chemicals from being dumped into our environment,” she said.
Materials were sorted, treated, recycled or disposed of appropriately according to their chemical type.
