CHRISTMAS lunch is going to taste very sweet for Casey-South Melbourne’s English import Peter Trego.
The Somerset all-rounder, whose family has escaped the blizzards of the motherland for an Aussie summer, produced yet another match-winning knock to lift his Swans over Footscray Edgewater in Saturday’s Twenty20 clash at Casey Fields.
His innings of 47 from 23 balls – including four fours and three sixes – was the only score of more than 20 in Casey-South Melbourne’s total of 120. He then claimed 2/9 from 3.3 overs as the home side dismissed the Bulldogs for 113 in reply.
Trego has now scored 164 runs at an average of 54 – and strike rate of 190 – in the Swans’ three T20 victories, which have brought his seventh-placed side within eight points of faltering ladder leader Dandenong as Premier Cricket breaks for Christmas.
Casey-South Melbourne welcomed pace spearhead Jayde Herrick back from first-class duties for Saturday’s game, and he made an immediate impact with the ball when he dismissed Shaun Dean before the Bulldogs had opened their account.
Herrick went on to take 3/20 from his four overs, while Trego and left-arm orthodox spinner Clive Rose (2/24) chipped in with two wickets apiece.
It was Rose’s catch – off Trego’s bowling – on the fourth-last ball of the Bulldogs’ innings that sent tailender Brad Robertson packing and clinched the win for the home side.
The Swans, who will be looking for a whitewash of the T20 fixtures when they return to action against Richmond on 8 January, are now well and truly in the hunt for a top-four finish this season.
They sit just six points behind second-placed Fitzroy-Doncaster, with each of the top four teams suffering losses on the weekend.
