Getting people back into the neighbourhood

By ALANA MITCHELSON

CARDINIA Shire has been selected as one of three councils in the metropolitan area to take part in a project encouraging three major community-led projects.
The Neighbourhood Project involves 12 months of mentoring, training and funding to empower residents in activating underused locations across the shire into vibrant community spaces.
Cardinia Shire Council mayor Jodie Owen said the project would begin later this month.
“The Neighbourhood Project will help us to lead positive and long-term change in our shire to enhance the wellbeing of all our residents, and create more connected, healthy and safe communities,” she said.
“This is a unique opportunity to empower our community to take an active role in shaping our public spaces and support the development of a strong sense of belonging for all members of our diverse and growing community.”
The project aims to equip the council with new skills and resources to increase collaboration with residents in its approach to creating public spaces.
Cardinia CEO Garry McQuillan said the project would give residents the opportunity to identify underutilised public spaces and unlock their potential to better serve the community.
