DUST off that bicycle helmet – Pakenham’s very own bike ride to raise money for charity is fast approaching.
The Slog, or the Slog to Sale as it used to be known, has seen 660 riders raise more than $150,000 for local charity 4Cs over the eight years since it first started and will happen on 5 November this year.
Originally sending riders on a trip from Pakenham to Sale, the ride is now split into two loops of different distances – a 150km ride that follows the Strzelecki Ranges and a 70km ride through Bayles, Catani and Modella.
Stephen Leach, one of the organisers, welcomes people of all ages and fitness levels to participate and give it a go.
“Anyone over the age of 14 can enter and there’s an open age limit – we’ve had people over the age of 65 take part,” he said.
“We encourage everyone who enjoys riding to enter and people of any skill level are welcome.”
This year has seen a record number of riders sign up, with more than 165 people registered so far.
“All the money we raise goes towards 4Cs and this year we’re hoping to raise $50,000,” Mr Leach said.
Pakenham cyclist Phillip Taylor, who has taken part in six out of the eight slog rides, will be riding the 150km loop this year and loves being part of the action.
“It’s not a race, you can just go at your own pace,” he said.
“It gives you a goal and not only do you get physical part of it, it also works you mentally.
He said even those who prefer not to ride can help and hopes everyone will do their part.
“If you can’t do it, support somebody else who is doing it. The family festival is different so if you can’t ride, you can be part of that. You can also welcome the riders back home – there’s something to do for everyone.”
The festival will be happening from 11am to 5pm, with food and drinks.
Registrations for The Slog will be open until 19 October. Check-in on the day will be from 6am to 7am at the Pakenham Baptist Church.
Those interested in taking part or donating to the cause can sign up via the website, www.theslog.com.au
