A MAN remains in a serious condition at The Alfred hospital following a hit and run in Narre Warren last week.
Police have been told that man, 21, and three friends were walking along the Princes Highway near Lauderdale Road at 11.40pm on Thursday after they had been drinking at a club.
Senior Sergeant Jeff Smith said the man was trying to pull his friend off of the road when he was struck by a white utility vehicle.
“There was a discussion on the side of the road and as a result the friend walked onto the road. It suffices to say they shouldn’t have been on the road after they had been drinking,” Sen Sgt Smith said.
“The victim walked onto the road to retrieve his friend and started to pull him across the road and when he did so, he was struck by a car in the eastbound lane and thrown to the ground and the car kept going.”
The man was taken to The Alfred, where he remains with serious head injuries.
Sen Sgt Smith said it was possible the driver of the vehicle did not realise the seriousness of the incident.
“One car actually drove around the youths and kept going and the second car that struck the man did not stop. There are no marks on the road to indicate emergency braking,” he said.
“The driver may have thought their vehicle had been kicked or they had incidental contact with the person on the road.”
Sen Sgt Smith said it is possible the vehicle would have damage on the left side.
Anyone with information about the collision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or alternatively visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
