Fire alarm goes

CASEY Council has reminded residents to obey local laws this fire season, after a Cannons Creek man was fined $2000 for burning off without a permit.
The incident occurred on 9 November, and the matter was heard at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 7 July.
During the incident, the man refused entry to the CFA members attending, and they reported it to the council and police. The man was charged under the City of Casey Community Local Law 2/2010 for burning off without a permit.
He was convicted and fined the maximum amount possible under the Local Law, and costs were also awarded against the accused. City of Casey manager Community Safety, Caroline Bell, said burning off any material was a last resort.
“This individual was burning building materials, asbestos, plastic, fibreglass and electrical wiring, all hazardous materials, and with complete disregard
for the health and amenity of neighbours,” Ms Bell said.
City of Casey Mayor Shar Balmes said ensuring the safety of residents and property in the municipality was important to council.
“The issue of permits is part of council’s proactive stance on fire management and bushfire prevention,” she said.
Casey residents are eligible for up to two hard waste collections per household each year. From 1 October, these may be booked at any time convenient for the resident. The City of Casey issues free permits for genuine fire reduction purposes. For more information, contact the City of Casey Customer Service on 9705 5200 or visit www.casey.vic.gov.au.
