School on fitness course

NEW sporting equipment at Berwick Field Primary School will help students increase their fitness and maintain their health.
The school is purchasing the equipment after it received a $1000 grant for winning the Nestle Healthy Active Classroom challenge.
The grant was one of 100 Nestlé Australia were giving to primary school teachers as part of their commitment with the Australian Institute of Sport to support health and physical education in schools.
These grants are to be applied toward a healthy and active initiative for students, such as new sports equipment or even a vegie patch students can tend.
Year 5/6 Physical Education teacher Amy Tivendale’s Year 5/6 Physical said the class entered the challenge in the hope of enhancing their physical education program.
“What a fantastic opportunity Nestle has provided for primary schools. We would not have had the funds available to purchase more sporting equipment for our students if it wasn’t for this grant,” Ms Tivendale said.
“Our Prep to Grade six students will benefit greatly in their skill development, and it will encourage them to live healthy active lifestyles by using our new equipment.”
Nestlé Head of Corporate Marketing, Katrina Koutoulas, said it was great to see teachers and schools, such as Berwick Fields Primary School embracing healthy living and utilising the Healthy Active Classroom resource, and encouraged others schools to follow in their footsteps.
To be eligible to obtain a grant, primary school teachers must register on the Healthy Active Classroom website, download unit one of the resource, have their students fill in an online nutrition quiz, and outline how their school would use the grant to encourage healthy, active lifestyles among their students.
The Healthy Active Classroom Challenge ends on 13 November. For more information on the Healthy Active Classroom resource, or to enter the Healthy Active Classroom Challenge, visit http://www.healthy-active-classroom.com.au/.
