Scorpions are ready for battle

BRAD Gotch was flicking through the 2011 VFL fixtures yesterday, eyeing the immediate challenges for his Casey Scorpions.
He came to two conclusions. The biggest hurdle, arguably, is this Saturday, but, more importantly, he says there are “no easy ones” ahead. “Everybody is hard to beat, they’re all tough,” Gotch said. “That’s what this competition is like.”
The litmus test is at TEAC Oval on Saturday, when the Scorpions come face-to-face with Port Melbourne.
In olden days, one got a better reception entering a warzone than the gates of the club known as the Borough. Though people mellow and times change, it’s still pretty daunting going into the heart of Port Melbourne to play footy.
Two weeks ago, the Gary-Ayres coached Borough visited Casey Fields for the final practice game for both clubs.
Port left Cranbourne East winners. Gotch hopes the Scorpions can leave TEAC Oval winners – but, more importantly, with four points. The Scorpions opened 2011 with a 27-point win over Geelong; the Borough were four goals too good for the Box Hill Hawks.
“Max Gawn jarred his knee for us and is doubtful, while John Baird (ex North Melbourne) may come into their side and Dean Galea (ex Williamstown) kicked four goals,” Gotch said.
“We will have to be at our best. The last time we were there (TEAC), the ground was in shocking condition.
“The small-size of the oval is a challenge as we are used to the open spaces of Casey Fields. But, you have to play on what you are given.
“I think Port are the measuring stick.”
