NATIONAL Ride2School Day is Australia’s largest celebration of walking and riding to school. The day aims to raise awareness of the health, economic and environmental reasons for encouraging children to have an active commute to school.
Participating students from Pakenham Springs Primary School met at their designated ‘Stop and Drop’ zones off Andrews Park in Sandalwood Drive, opposite Honeyeater Way, and the corner of MacKellar and Livingstone Boulevard. Parents and teachers also joined in on the journey to school.
Children chose to either walk, ride, scoot or skate to school from these ‘Stop and Drop’ points.
Cardinia Council’s Active Children’s Officer Kate Beveridge said the concept of ‘Stop and Drop’ zones was created in consultation with the students as a way to help be active and limit traffic congestion around schools.
“Not only does it reduce traffic it is a great way to save on fuel and be environmentally friendly.”
