POLICE are still catching speeding and drink drivers, just weeks after three Casey road fatalities and an impassioned plea for safer driving this Christmas.
Highway Patrol Casey’s Sergeant Pat McGavigan said people had to accept the consequences after the highway patrol caught a number of speeding drivers and drink drivers in Casey on the weekend.
“Highway Patrol Casey will continue to target road users in an attempt to let everyone have a safe Christmas on the roads,” he said.
“The people we’re catching for speed and alcohol, combined with the weather we’ve been having – it’s a tragedy waiting to happen,” Sgt McGavigan said.
The patrol revoked nine licenses for speed related offences, caught four drivers with a blood alcohol reading of over 0.05 and issued 113 other traffic offences during a bad weekend on our roads.
A Narre Warren South motorcyclist was detected travelling at 149km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Princes Highway, Narre Warren.
The 21-year-old learner rider, who had only held his licence for six months, was caught at 7.30am on Sunday.
A Narre Warren South probationary driver was travelling at an alleged speed of 141km/h in an 80km/h zone and was not displaying P-plates.
He was nabbed by Stonnington Highway Patrol at 2.30am on Saturday in Glen Iris.
Both men had their licences suspended for 12 months and vehicles impounded for 48 hours.
Another driver was nabbed on the Monash Freeway on Monday morning, allegedly travelling at 174km/h.
Also over the weekend, a Yarraville man was caught driving with a blood alcohol reading of .124 in Berwick.
Earlier this month, three people lost their lives on Casey’s roads including a 54-year-old Casey council worker, an 18-year-old Cranbourne man and a 56-year-old Narre Warren man.
The Casey road toll sits at nine for the year and Sgt McGavigan said police were working hard to keep it that way but needed the support of the public.
