Seniors support vision centre

By Lia Bichel
A MICROWAVE, special assessment equipment and magnifying tools will benefit blind or low vision people in the Berwick, Dandenong and surrounds.
National Seniors Berwick and District donated $955 to Vision Australia Dandenong to provide the centre with the equipment.
“Given the current harsh economic climate, resources in our sector will be pushed to the limit,” Vision Australia Dandenong team manager Sandie Mackevicius said.
“It is the generosity of the community that makes the difference to help us support the thousands of people across the country who are blind or have low vision.
“So we are always very grateful of support from partnerships such as the National Seniors Berwick and District Branch.”
The special microwave will allow people to develop their independent living skills, branch president Trevor Ratcliffe said.
“The touch pad control means people who are blind or have low vision can use it and the centre will use this to train clients to cook independently,” he said.
“This equipment will help Vision Australia to provide even better service to people who are blind or have low vision in the Dandenong and Berwick areas.”
Vision Australia Dandenong was officially opened by CEO Gerard Menses on 12 May.
The custom-designed centre features a variety of facilities, including a client interview room, adaptive technology training rooms, children’s rooms, meeting rooms and low vision services such as optometry, orthoptic and low vision adviser clinics.
